Scout's Corner: Albion Park White Eagles

Albion Park White Eagles, led by Portuguese ex-professional player Alfredo Esteves will be looking to improve on their 7th place finish from the 2012 season. APWE would feel that they underachieved a little last year, taking into account their recruitment drive and calibre of their playing roster.

The Team: 2012 was a frustrating year for the Albion Park White Eagles (APWE). Throughout the season APWE showed signs of their quality, taking points off Dapto-Dandaloo on both occasions as well as Bulli in round 1.

Their recruitment drive, again, has been very impressive with arguably the biggest signing of the year Mark Picciolini (from South Coast Wolves), leading from the front. Picciolini was the leading goal scorer for the Wolves for three consecutive years and will be looking to continue this form with his new club.

Alfredo Esteves’ side netted an impressive 36 goals last year including a thrilling 5 all draw with Cringila Lions in round 15.

Another impressive signing for APWE is that of Jonathon Ramos. Ramos is a renowned speedster and goal scorer and showed this throughout his years at Port Kembla. Picciolini and Ramos, to go with the re-signing of Paul Ryrie, should prove to be a formidable front line for opposing teams this season.

The midfield line-up also looks to be an impressive one, with the likes of Andrej Gacesa, Harvey Rodriguez, Tony Dulevski and Dave Groavac pulling the strings. Cousins Paul and Peter Gaffney will also be looking to have big 2013 seasons. Last year, Paul Gaffney turned back the clock and resurrected his Premier League career, picking up the APWE Player of the year award.

To strengthen the defensive line, APWE have looked to the US, bringing in ex-Tacoma Tide goalkeeper Jordan Jennings to put pressure on current number 1 Adam Rodriguez. APWE have also signed a defender from the US, Cameron Valentine, who is a close friend of Jennings’.

Rising Star: This year APWE have a solid first team, in which the young squad members might find it difficult to get a crack in the top grade. In saying this, one who has impressed in the limited pre-season opportunities is Alan Warburton. Alan played in the APWE youth team last year and saw some match time in the top grade. He will be looking to build on this and try and hold down a regular first team position.

The Gaffer: The 2013 season will be Alfredo Esteves’ second year in charge of APWE. Last  year the White Eagles’ defensive record would’ve caused Esteves some concern and he will be looking to rectify this with some solid defensive displays.

Esteves holds a very impressive playing resume and will be looking to enhance his already growing reputation as a coach. The 2013 additions to the squad, as well as the re-signing of most of the core players, should put APWE in a good position in 2013.
